Screen Shot 2019-04-10 at 12.21.13 PMRecently, the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) has released its most recent epic a few weeks ago, Captain Marvel. It has been trolled by many internet trolls and has not been as celebrated as Black Panther (which has a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This has an 80%), can Captain Marvel be the MCU’s gold standard feminist film?

Apparently it can. Brie Larson does a compelling performance as the titular heroine Carol Danvers. Ben Mendelsohn has an emotional performance as the Skrull, Talos. Samuel L. Jackson also does really well as a young Nick Fury. His relationship with Brie Larson’s character is a very compelling sub-plot in the movie. Lashana Lynch does a really good job at portraying Maria Rambeau. However the movie’s main scene stealer is Goose the cat whom is an adorably and irresistibly cute cat who is hard not to love. Goose is lovable from the moment he is introduced in the movie to the end where he is included in a post credit scene.

The movie also does a great job with balancing out the humor in its first half. The part where Carol asks for where she can find communication devices is a hilarious exchange between that cameo actor and Brie Larson. Carol’s finding herself arc is a really emotionally portrayed and well done arc. The movie does so well, it covers up a major but emotional plot twist you don’t and probably will not see coming. There is a mid-credits scene as well as a post-credits scene. Stay for the mid-credits scene is my recommendation. It answers a question important to Avengers: Endgame. The post credits scene may be important though I’m not sure exactly if it is.

The movie overall may seem a little slow at a few scenes but it’s worth your time. Especially during Captain Marvel’s final battle with the movie’s true antagonist (whom I won’t spoil. You’ll have to see the movie to find out), the wait seems worth it. The film also uses exciting fight scenes throughout to ensure everybody if gripped to it. The best fight scene is of course the final battle although that always is the case. Is it not for some films? Overall, this film is exciting, well acted, emotional, funny and gripping. I would rate the film 4.5/5 stars.
