Daniel: Hello, today I will be interviewing you.
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Okay.
Daniel: OK, I’m going to ask you a series of questions.
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Okay.
Daniel: Do you swear that the answers you shall give, shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Maybe.
Daniel: OK, here I go.
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yes.
Daniel: What is your favourite color?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Dark purple, like that purple coloured plastic bin.
Daniel: Do you have a pet?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yes.
Daniel: What is your blood type?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): A Negative, I think.
Daniel: Are you single or married?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Single. Always.
Daniel: What is your favourite sport?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): I hate sports!
Daniel: What is your favourite subject?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): IRLA.
Daniel: What type of music do you like, if any?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Metal.
Daniel: What inspired you to become a teacher?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): ‘Cause I had a lot of terrible teachers, so I wanted to be a good one.
Daniel: Have you ever thought about a different career? If so,
what?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Um, I kinda want to be a supervisor, maybe, ‘cause I write curriculum a lot.
Daniel: What is the best part of your job?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Probably when the students do something on their own based on what I taught them.
Daniel: What is the worst part of your job?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Grading.
Daniel: What do you hope to achieve by being a teacher?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Umm, I want to give the students the necessary skills to survive in high school and the outside world and have fun in class.
Daniel: Do you have any heroes?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Umm, hmm, Sima Yi of the Wei Dynasty.
Daniel: Did you want this career as a kid?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yeah, yeah, probably by like 6th grade, somewhere around there.
Daniel: What were your childhood dreams?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Hmm, hmm, probably just to leave some kind of legacy, I guess.
Daniel: Do you feel that you have made an impact on your students? If so, in what way?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Absolutely. I’ve changed their sense of humor and taught them many things that are strange and wonderful. Well that’s as honest as I can be.
Daniel: Did you go to college and how many years did you go there?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yes. 5 years.
Daniel: Have you ever been to graduate school? If so, how long?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Nope. I should go, but no.
Daniel: What degrees have you achieved in college?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Biology Secondary Education and a minor in Asian Studies.
Daniel: What was your major when you were in college?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Umm, Biology Secondary Education.
Daniel: Have you ever been a mentor to someone? If so, who?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yes. Mrs. Mathes.
Daniel: What was it like for you in college?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Ummm, oh God. It is very hard that it was interesting. I did not like living on campus.
Daniel: Are you happy so far with what you have achieved as being a teacher?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Absolutely.
Daniel: How long have you been teaching?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): 7 years.
Daniel: Of the years you have been teaching, which do you think was your most successful? Why?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Last year, because all of the science teachers figured out how to teach the new curriculum and made all the labs and activities fun and easy to do.
Daniel: Do you enjoy reading?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Reading? Yeah.
Daniel: Are you a good writer?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Yes.
Daniel: Are you a good poet?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Uhh, I’ve never tried.
Daniel: What was it that got you interested in teaching?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): I tried teaching when I was teaching taekwondo and found out I was really good at it.
Daniel: Why did you choose to teach Science?
7S Science Teacher (Mr. Christian Rathbun): Ummm, because it is really, really hard to get a job in IRLA because so many people apply for it.
