Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a scientist working on cutting-edge research? More than fifty Grover seventh and eighth grade students were able to learn about Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, about what it’s like to be a scientist, and about careers in Science and Engineering.
Dr. Arturo Dominguez met with the students for a fun, interactive program during their lunch periods on Friday, November 18th.
Students had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Dominguez, a member of PPPL’s Science Education department, and ask questions about his career path. “This is such a terrific experience for the students,” said Mrs. Cohen, Grover’s PRISM teacher and the facilitator of the Lunch and Learn program. “Where else can they have the chance to get ‘up-close and personal’ with professionals and ask them about the work they do and what kind of educational path they took to be able to do it?”
Grover’s Lunch and Learn program has hosted past speakers including authors, physical therapists, Peace Corps volunteers, classical composers, teachers, and journalists. Research has shown the importance of exposing students to career opportunities and information prior to age 14, and the Lunch and Learn series is tremendously helpful in achieving those goals. Students may even choose to tailor their high school curriculum to meet needs they identify for professions in which they are interested.
