The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is a type of hummingbird that is commonly found in New Jersey, along with many other varieties of hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are famous for their wings and diet, but there is much more to them then that. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is small, with shorter wings than most types. The males have, as in the name, “brilliant iridescent red throat” while the females are duller colors. All hummingbirds are known for their flying habits, which includes them being able to beat their wings over 1000 times per minute! Their hearts, are just as busy, beating 1200 to 1260 times per minute! These hummingbirds fly straight, and very fast; but can also hover, stop instantly, and adjust their position down, up, and even backwards.
These birds can be found in meadows, parks, woodlands, forest edges, grasslands, gardens, and even backyards. Ruby Throated Hummingbird males are extremely territorial and aggressive to other hummingbirds, and even some insects, such as the sphinx moth. The male also, after mating with a female, leaves her to raise their young alone. These birds are definitely awesome, and worth finding out more!
